An Instagram video posted on Wednesday, 7 October, shows socialite Abu Abel going down on all fours to prostrate before Fuji legend KWAM 1 (Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal) on stage, a gesture of respect rooted in Yoruba culture. While Abel was prostrate, KWAM 1's aide, KC, patted him on the back, and many viewers found it out of place.
KWAM 1 then embraced Abel and the two exchanged pleasantries, so the interaction otherwise looked cordial. One comment, "That KC ehn, make K1 caution him oo.. He dey pat Abel for back," inspired the headline. Others felt KC was presenting himself as bigger than those honouring KWAM 1.
Not everyone agreed: one user argued the backlash was overblown given KC's apparently cordial relationship with Abel and called the criticism classism, while another said KC did nothing wrong but that Yoruba people are culturally attentive.
The article recalls an earlier viral moment in which KWAM 1 fully prostrated on stage for former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the 60th birthday celebration of the Olota of Ota.
