The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 1,138 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 268 deaths across 24 states and 119 local government areas as of epidemiological week 40 (ending 4 October 2026).

The case fatality rate stands at 23.6%, higher than the 18.6% recorded in the same period of 2025. Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue account for 88% of confirmed cases, with Ondo leading at 36%. People aged 21–30 are the most affected group.

The NCDC attributes the elevated fatality rate to late presentation at health facilities, high treatment costs, poor health-seeking behaviour and inadequate sanitation. In the latest week, only three new confirmed cases (and one death) were recorded, down from 13 the previous week. No new healthcare worker infections were reported in the last two weeks.

Health authorities continue to urge early reporting of symptoms and strict rodent control measures.
