Twenty prospective corps members abducted on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State on 1 October have been freed in a joint military, DSS and police operation. Now a new question is circulating: what happened to the ransom?
According to Daily Trust, as summarised in Monday's reviews, the family of one victim had paid ₦6 million for his release during negotiations. The parents now say that money was returned. They are unsure whether negotiators actually delivered it to the kidnappers before the victims were freed, and the account of who refunded it is unclear. Three family representatives handled the talks.
Vanguard's Monday edition separately carries security experts on why kidnappers target NYSC members. Nothing in the reports seen explains the refund, and no official has confirmed the ransom claim.
