The fight over the government's 30-day petrol discount is turning into a campaign issue. According to Monday's newspaper reviews, the Presidency described Atiku Abubakar's politics as "shallow" and said voters would not trade long-term economic security for it. Atiku had asked what happens once the 30 days end, and Peter Obi asked whether a one-month discount can reduce poverty and insecurity.
The Presidency insists the measure is not a return to subsidy. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced on Thursday a 30-day discount at NNPC stations with public transporters served first, a N1,350 per litre ceiling on landing cost and monthly reviews. Vanguard reports that marketers meanwhile raised pump prices in Abuja and Lagos by up to N29 per litre.
ThisDay reports that the NLC gave the government two weeks from 9 October to bring petrol prices down to the level at which the 2024 minimum wage was agreed, which puts the deadline at around 23 October. Premium Times has run an explainer comparing Tinubu's relief plan with Atiku's subsidy proposal.
