President Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning for Air Force personnel killed when a military plane crashed on Monday, 5 October, ordering flags to be flown at half-mast nationwide, according to a statement by Bayo Onanuga.
The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos with 25 passengers and seven crew when air traffic controllers lost contact at 09:13. It crashed near the naval base in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa told Channels Television that rescuers found no survivors at the site in Ilaje Local Government Area. He said residents heard a loud sound and saw the aircraft dive into a swampy area. The Navy first checked for fire or an explosion before searching for survivors: "When they noticed that it's just an accident, they didn't see any sign of fire." Local emergency agencies, residents and Amotekun personnel joined the search.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had earlier said the wreckage was located and search and rescue operations were ongoing.
