The African Union has officially designated Nigeria's National Counter Terrorism Centre as a regional hub of excellence for West Africa and the Sahel. According to Vanguard, the unit under the National Security Adviser's office will now support regional security through shared intelligence, specialised operational training, and capacity development against violent extremism.
The decision was announced in Abuja by the Acting Director of the African Union Counter Terrorism Centre, Dr Idriss Mounir Lallali. He explained that the recognition followed a detailed evaluation of the facility's governance, analytical tools, training schedules, and strict adherence to fundamental human rights and legal principles.
A statement by NCTC strategic communication head, Abu Michael, noted that the three-year renewable endorsement completes a roadmap initiated in 2025. National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who spoke through Major General Adamu Garba Laka, welcomed the milestone as both a major achievement and an added responsibility.
