Kuwait Sets Conditions for Foreign Workers Joining Unions

Kuwait's government has introduced two specific conditions that foreign employees must fulfill to become members of registered trade unions or professional bodies. According to a report by Legit.ng, expatriates in the Gulf nation must satisfy both rules simultaneously to qualify for membership.
To be eligible, an expatriate must possess an active work permit and have resided in Kuwait for at least five years. The authorities emphasized that fulfilling just one of these requirements will not allow any foreign worker to participate in these established labor organizations.
Despite opening union membership to eligible expatriates, the host nation explicitly prohibited foreigners from creating new labor associations. Foreign nationals constitute a large percentage of Kuwait's total workforce, serving extensively in sectors like health, domestic labor, and building construction.
