The Federal Executive Council has sanctioned the start of procurement for East and West Super Grids, according to Vanguard. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced after a meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu that the project aims to increase the country's electricity transmission capacity from 5,000 to 19,000 megawatts within two years.
Tegbe explained that while Nigeria generates over 13,000 megawatts of power, weak transmission lines restrict delivery to only 5,000 megawatts. To address immediate demands, the cabinet approved critical power projects for key commercial hubs, including transformer upgrades for Ikeja West in Lagos and network enhancements connecting Katampe substation in Abuja.
Furthermore, the power ministry has initiated a nationwide technical audit across three energy zones to pinpoint failing infrastructure, Tegbe stated. According to the minister, this four-week assessment will guide future government spending, ensuring funds are directed strictly toward repairing weak operational assets to help stabilize grid power supply.
