Donald Trump says Ukraine needs a new leader. "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president," he said, adding: "I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal." He blamed Volodymyr Zelenskyy for Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries that he says have helped push up global diesel prices: "He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers with diesel fuel."
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha defended Zelenskyy: "He has the support of the Ukrainian people, and they have the right to decide." A Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia killed 20 people, including three children, and Zelenskyy linked it to the diesel deal: "Today, Russia said thank you for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports."
US Rep. Don Bacon called for more sanctions rather than rolling them back, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said London would strengthen sanctions on Russia. Al Jazeera also reported on 11 October that Trump called for a Ukrainian election, saying Zelenskyy had failed to end the war.
