Nigeria fell from 26th to 30th in the FIFA men's ranking released on 7 October 2026, with 1,567.97 points. They also dropped from fourth to sixth in Africa, behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire.
The slide follows a 2-1 win over Madagascar in Uyo on 25 September and a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in AFCON 2027 qualifying on 29 September at the September 24 Stadium in Bissau.
Forward Akor Adams said the players were disappointed, accepted responsibility and were working to correct their mistakes. He criticised the pitch in Bissau but did not blame it for the result.
