The Federal Ministry of Power has secured the release of 98 containers filled with critical electricity transmission equipment that had been abandoned at Lagos ports for up to 20 years, according to Daily Post.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, revealed that 44 containers were retrieved from the ENL Terminal, while 54 were cleared from the APMT and Sun & Moon Terminals. He noted that these form part of over 300 stranded containers holding high-capacity transformers, cables, and switchgear meant to strengthen the nationwide power network.
Tegbe explained that the prolonged detention of the cargo had hindered major infrastructure projects, put excessive pressure on existing substations, and led to heavy administrative fees. He added that the intervention followed a direct order from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructing government agencies to resolve all lingering bottlenecks immediately.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, affirmed that the Nigeria Customs Service is working with the Nigerian Ports Authority and terminal operators to clear the remaining containers. Following initial inspections, officials found most of the equipment to be in working condition, with plans underway to test, refurbish, and deploy the gear to project sites to help stabilize the electricity supply across Nigeria.
