With the sequel breaking box-office records, Mount Zion Films founder Mike Bamiloye has told the story of how the original Agbara Nla was made in 1993 for just ₦5,000.
He says the cast and crew lived on basic food during the shoot, with no marketing plan or manager. After it became a hit, five competing marketers fought over distribution rights while his family went without food. When the family approached one marketer for payment, he was dismissive, and Bamiloye said he gave up the financial reward.
"You can take all the money. You can't take the anointing," he said. He recounted a message he believed he received: "I never told you that I will make you rich through Agbara Nla... But I will give you a name through the movie." His advice: "Don't look for money. Let Him give you honour."
