The Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria association (ALTON) has asked state authorities to eliminate right-of-way expenses for telecom firms. Speaking in Abuja, ALTON Chairman Gbenga Adebayo revealed that these fees represent up to 60 per cent of fibre installation costs in several regions, Vanguard reported.

Adebayo explained that excessive charges hinder operators from providing fast internet access to remote and underserved areas. According to him, waiving these levies would decrease setup expenses, attract fresh capital, and allow telecom companies to easily expand their network infrastructure to places with lower immediate revenue.

Furthermore, ALTON recommended deploying resources from the Universal Service Provision Fund to support expansion efforts in difficult locations. Adebayo emphasized that a strong broadband foundation remains vital for boosting service quality and supporting digital advancements, including artificial intelligence development across the country.
