Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has rejected claims that his government financed demonstrators who displayed Russian flags during Nigeria's 2024 #EndBadGovernance rallies. Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Lavrov maintained that his country respects Nigeria's sovereignty and had no involvement in any actions aimed at undermining the African nation.
According to Vanguard, Lavrov stated that those who displayed the banners acted purely on their personal choice. He likened the situation to people carrying Palestinian banners worldwide to express sympathy, emphasizing that such individual demonstrations do not signify official coordination or support from the foreign state.
The demonstrations took place in August 2024 over severe economic hardship, with flags appearing in Abuja, Kano, and other northern areas. Nigerian security agencies had labeled the acts treasonous and detained several suspects. However, Lavrov stressed that diplomatic cooperation and educational partnerships between both nations remain firm.
