US President Donald Trump has relaxed select import duties on goods coming from Canada just weeks before the nation's midterm elections. According to Vanguard, the White House confirmed that the policy change targets several items, including cooling equipment, paper products, plywood sheets, and particular industrial machinery.
The decision followed intervention from Republican lawmaker Susan Collins, who is fighting a tough re-election race in Maine. Collins revealed on social media that she lobbied for the exemptions to protect local agricultural sectors like potato, blueberry, and apple farming, which depend on specialized items sourced from Canada.
While duties were removed on certain goods, the American government simultaneously introduced fresh levies on products such as carpets, waste materials, and specific valves. Reports indicate these updated trade policies will officially take effect on October 30 as tensions remain high between both North American neighbours.
