A video posted to Instagram on 21 September shows a Celestial Church cleric in a white sutana leading his congregation in worship using Seyi Vibez's song "Normally", with members reportedly singing along. It has since gone viral.
The debate is whether a secular artist's song belongs in Christian worship, and whether the messenger changes the message. Some argue the song's spiritual undertones make it acceptable for church.
Reactions poured in. "Whether you like it or not, that's a worship song," wrote one user. Another said: "If they can sing Teni's Maliaka, then this shouldn't be a problem." A self-identified Celestial member wrote: "Omo as a celestial member, shame wear me sutana."
Seyi Vibez, described as a street-hop and Afrobeats artist, has not been quoted in the report.
