Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has opened up about how hard the spotlight was to handle. Speaking on The Boost Podcast, she said she always wanted success in music but wasn't ready for the attention that followed.
"I was so afraid. I wanted to continue my secret life," she said. She also recalled praying, "God, please, I don't want to be in the spotlight," and admitted she sometimes denied being Tems when recognised in public, such as at airports.
It's quite a turn for an artist who quit her job as a digital marketer in 2018 to go full-time into music and released her debut single, Mr Rebel, that same year. Her international breakthrough came in 2020 with her feature on Wizkid's Essence.
Fans have been sharing their own stories of the moment Tems' voice first hooked them. What's yours? Tag #Trending9ja
