The Federal Government has approved plans to develop new eastern and western electricity grids as part of efforts to reduce frequent national grid collapses and strengthen transmission infrastructure.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced the approval at an energy conference in Lagos, saying the procurement process is underway and Nigerians should begin to see benefits within two to three years. A nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure is also ongoing.
Tegbe noted that Lagos and Abuja corridors account for over 50% of demand. Ageing infrastructure, some dating back to the ECN era, remains a key challenge.
