INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has warned that deepfakes, fabricated audio, and coordinated AI-generated disinformation pose a growing threat to the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an AI and Democracy forum, Amupitan reiterated that while AI will be used in electoral processes, algorithms will not decide winners. “The human ballot will prevail,” he stressed.
The warning comes amid ongoing controversies over candidate omissions and preparations including QR codes for PVC collection. INEC has given affected parties until October 24 to challenge omissions following a Supreme Court judgment on membership registers.
