Edo State Varsity Top Medical Graduate Recounts Academic Journey at 21

Oladosu Adedolapo has emerged as the top graduating student in Medicine and Surgery at Edo State University, Iyamho, completing her medical degree at the age of 21 after being admitted when she was 15 years old.

Adedolapo shared details of her educational path in an interview with Punch. She explained that she gained entry into the tertiary institution in 2020. Her family selected the university because it did not mandate an age limit of 16 years for admission, which is common in many Nigerian higher institutions, while also providing quality medical facilities.

The top graduate explained that becoming a medical doctor was a long-standing childhood dream. She noted that her interest grew stronger after her older sister enrolled to study the same discipline at the institution. Adedolapo, the third of four children raised by parents of modest financial means, attributed her success to the principles of discipline, hard work, and faith instilled by her upbringing.

Describing her experience in medical school, Adedolapo stated that the program was far more demanding than she initially expected. She observed that succeeding required efficient study techniques, proper time management, and resilience, as the workload went beyond simple academic intellect.

She identified her transition to clinical studies during her fourth year, following her first MB examinations, as the most taxing period of her training. According to her, adjusting to clinical postings, pharmacology, pathology, ward rounds, and patient presentations presented a steep learning curve that tested her commitment.
