The Nollywood crime thriller Black Market has been recognised by Guinness World Records for the "largest attendance at a film screening in a single location." A total of 51,000 viewers, counting only those who stayed from start to finish, qualified for the record at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos.
The number is a point of friction: Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat said 64,000 people attended, but Guinness did not use that figure. Organisers had aimed for 50,000. The previous record was 43,624 viewers, set in 2015 at the Philippine Arena for the Filipino film Felix Manalo.
Gates opened at 2pm, the red carpet began at about 3pm and the main screening started at 7pm. Attendees included Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor, Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Gabriel Afolayan, Kunle Afolayan and Toke Benson.
Black Market is directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and co-written with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. It follows five women in a cross-border smuggling operation, and it hits cinemas this October.
