Nigerian-Born Scholar Dapo Akande Elected as ICJ Judge
Nigerian-born international legal expert Professor Dapo Akande has been elected to serve a nine-year term as a judge on the International Court of Justice.

The Democratic Party has recorded major victories in the United States 2026 midterm elections, flipping key positions in Texas, according to a report by Daily Post. Thirty-seven-year-old Democrat James Talarico won the Texas Senate seat after defeating Republican candidate Ken Paxton, who has served as the state's Attorney General since 2015.
In another significant outcome in the state, 52-year-old Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott. With this victory, Hinojosa becomes the first Latina to hold the gubernatorial office in Texas, as well as the first Democratic governor in the state since Ann Richards was defeated by George W. Bush in 1994, Daily Post reported.
During his victory address, Talarico described his campaign as a battle similar to David and Goliath, noting that his team faced heavy opposition from influential figures. He mentioned competing against prominent personalities, including President Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk, and the political establishment in Washington, D.C. He credited Texas voters for giving him the strength to win. Following the declaration, sitting Texas Senator John Cornyn congratulated Talarico and offered to support him as he prepares to serve in the Senate.
Both newly elected leaders previously served in the Texas House of Representatives. Talarico, a graduate of both the University of Texas at Austin and Harvard University, has been a state lawmaker since 2018. Hinojosa, who worked as a labor and civil rights attorney before entering public office, has represented her constituency in the state house since 2017.
Beyond Texas, the Democratic Party gained full control of the United States Congress after taking at least six Senate seats previously held by Republicans. Daily Post detailed that the election outcomes were largely driven by voter dissatisfaction regarding governance issues, economic strain, trade policies, and rising fuel prices caused by the war in Iran.
