Experts Urge Nigerian Farmers To Adopt Soil-Based Fertiliser Recommendations

Agricultural specialists have advised against using uniform fertiliser formulas across different farming locations, urging a transition to recommendations tailored to specific ground conditions. According to Vanguard, the experts made this call during the 2026 Nigeria Fertiliser Summit on Phosphorus and Food Security held in Abuja.

The summit was organised by the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Research shared by the Regional Hub for Soil Health indicated that phosphorus needs for crops like rice and maize in northern parts of the country range between zero and over 60 kilogrammes per hectare.

Speaking at the summit, Professor Vincent Aduramigba-Modupe of the research institute explained that improving farm output requires delivering the right nutrients in appropriate quantities rather than simply increasing overall usage. Vanguard reported that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, represented by Oshadiya Olanipekun, also highlighted soil testing and data analysis as vital tools to help farmers achieve better yields.

Furthermore, Professor Jibrin Mohammed Jibrin from Bayero University Kano emphasized the necessity of detailed soil information for sustainable national food production. He cautioned against uncoordinated agricultural initiatives, urging key stakeholders to work together. Dr. Bello Shehu and Obafemi Awolowo University Vice-Chancellor Professor A.S. Bamire also reinforced the need for responsible nutrient management and strategic research partnerships.
