US President Donald Trump was scheduled to speak at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio on Wednesday, 7 October, at a rally for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton and congressional candidate Carlos De La Cruz, according to The Texas Tribune. It is Trump's third trip to Texas in less than a month.
The stakes are high. Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico has consistently led Paxton narrowly in polling, and nearly $175 million in outside ad spending has gone into the race, much of it since early September.
Trump carried Texas by 14 points in 2024, but a Texas Politics Project poll in August found 42% of Texas voters viewed him favourably, 9 points underwater. He has also lost Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, all three times he has been on the Texas ballot.
In the 35th Congressional District, De La Cruz faces moderate Democrat Johnny Garcia, with a MAGA Inc.-linked PAC spending $4 million on ads. De La Cruz dismissed the idea that he should distance himself from the president as "hogwash." Vice President JD Vance has also been campaigning in the state.
